The president of the club, Emma Henry, and former officer, Haley Garner, informed numerous future veterinarian students on what to expect when applying to vet school. Emma urged everyone to have a open mind to multiple schools through their process of applying. Having a hope to get into your dream school is not a bad thing, but it is always good to have a back up. You are better off rejected by one of your options, than your only choice.
What do most schools ask of you when applying? Each program will have their unique way of submitting essays or requirements. Although, the most common requests are: letter of recommendations, personal essays, and a undergraduate resumé. Most schools do require taking the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and a 30 second at home judgment test. However, this depends on each institute.
What experiences should undergraduates have? Emma recommended being involved in research before your junior year because of the recent peak of interest vet schools have. Another tip was to be active in extra curricular activities. Haley quickly prompted everyone to write down when you have started and finished each experience. This information will serve to be useful when creating your resumé. Both Emma and Haley recommended working on the application process during the summer. This can help minimize stress and anxiety. The key take away is to not get discouraged through this application experience. There is a lot to do, but you are not alone.
